The Plains Community League is looking forward to a new season filled with connecting, serving, celebrating, and creating lasting memories together. From golf tournaments to tutoring, scarecrows to Santa, there truly is something for everyone this fall. 

TPCL kicks off events on September 18 with O'Brien's Irish Pub Annual Charity Golf Tournament. This year's tournament is extra special to our Town because O'Brien's has selected The Plains Community League as the event's charitable recipient. We are deeply grateful to the many local businesses and community members who have generously donated items for the Silent Auction, and to the ultimate auction winners. Your support helps strengthen the programs and services we provide throughout the year. 

Making a difference in education: on September 22 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., we’ll hold Tutoring 101, an introduction to our tutoring program for both returning and prospective volunteers. Tutors can be retirees, business owners, homemakers, high school or college students. No formal teaching experience is required. Guests will meet current tutors, tour the John Page Turner Community House, learn about the program, and enjoy a light meal. One week later, on September 29, students begin attending tutoring sessions for the 2026-2027 school year. We are excited to reconnect with familiar faces and warmly welcome new students to the program. Hope you can join our volunteer tutoring crew!

October means one of our favorite autumn community traditions, the Annual Scarecrow Contest. Three prizes will be awarded to our winners - $100 to First Place, $75 to Second Place and $50 to Third Place. To compete, you need to work fast -- registration closes on Friday, October 2 and online, public voting is from October 3 to October 10. 

A Day in The Plains

The Scarecrows are up early because we want to show off The Plains creativity to visitors and residents alike on October 3. TPCL is holding an annual celebration from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the John Page Turner Community House grounds and the Town Park. A Day in The Plains is a community celebration where families will find plenty of fun with Unicorn Hugs and photo opportunities, Touch-a-Fire-Truck, Brennan's Balloons, Hilt Facepainting, children's games, and an old-fashioned bake sale. Add live music, delicious food, a lemonade stand in the Town Park gazebo, open shops and studios throughout town, plus the scarecrows! and you have the perfect autumn celebration. 

As Thanksgiving approaches, we are reminded of our blessings, and the joyful spirit of giving. TPCL provides Thanksgiving dinner groceries on Sunday, November 22, picked up by or delivered to those families in need. With volunteer help during the days before and on pickup day itself, we typically pack and deliver as many as 50 meals to our neighbors in The Plains.

TThe holiday season continues December 19 when Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive by horse-drawn wagon at the John Page Turner House. Children can meet Santa, receive gifts, enjoy crafts and treats, and take festive wagon rides. It's always one of the most magical days of the year. 

Then, on Christmas Eve, a dedicated group of volunteers once again illuminate the main streets of The Plains with glowing luminaries. As darkness falls, their welcoming, gentle light will twinkle throughout the evening, creating a beautiful and cherished The Plains holiday tradition for residents and visitors alike. 

From autumn festivities to holiday celebrations, the months ahead promise countless opportunities to gather, volunteer, and celebrate the unique spirit of The Plains. We hope you'll join us as we make this season one to remember.
